Lingkhor is the most common name of the outer sacred path in Lhasa, matching its inner twin, Barkhor. In its heyday, it was about 8 kilometers long, enclosing Old Lhasa, Potala Palace and Chokpori Hill. In the middle sacred path Barkhor, generally the old and middle-aged pilgrims often walk around the old parts of the city in early morning till afternoon. This street popular among locals and tourists, is fully decorated with local customs. You can see Tibetan traditional constructions, and tourist souvenirs shops along the street. Nangkhor is the innermost circumambulation path around Jokhang Temple. This trip is designed for you to enjoy authentic Tibetan food and beverage in Lhasa. Your tour guide will take you to visit some Tibetan restaurants and tea houses in Lhasa. In order to adapt to the extremely high altitude and harsh climate, Tibetan people have to eat food with high energy, which can keep them warm. Due to the high altitude, water boils at 90 degrees centigrade, making cooking with water difficult. Vegetables are also scarce, so Tibetan cuisine has become very special. The main ingredients are meat and dairy products. The food in Tibet shows a strong similarity to that in India and parts of China, but is uniquely Tibetan.

You can visit two of the three most important monasteries in Lhasa in one day, Drepung and Sera. Drepung Monastery was firstly built in 1416 by Jamyang Chojey who was a direct disciple of Je Tsongkhapa and the founder of Gelukpa School of Tibetan Buddhism. It housed 7,700 monks in its heyday. It was known for its high standards of academic study, and was called the Nalanda of Tibet, a reference to the great Buddhist monastic university of India. Sera Monastery is also one of the three principal Gelukpa monasteries built in Lhasa. The highlight of visiting the monastery will be watching a monks’ debating in the shady courtyard behind its main temple. Every day, hundreds of red-robed monks assemble in small groups and practice their debating skills. It is a highly entertaining spectacle, during which they strike poses not dissimilar to hip hop rappers.
